Amazon Web Services Inc. (AWS), has been continuously upgrading its tools for converting data warehouse schemas into database and extracting/importing housed data into AWS target sources. Yesterday, AWS announced new SQL Server functionality.
AWS provides an AWS Schema Conversion Tool, (SCT), as part of its AWS Database Migrator Service (DMS). This tool converts the source database schema and most of the custom code to a format compatible for the target database.
AWS now supports data extraction from Teradata and Oracle data warehouses to the Amazon Redshift data warehouse. Last month, AWS announced SCT schema conversion functionality for SQL Server data warehouses to Amazon Redshift. This is not to be confused by extraction. Yesterday, the company announced SQL Server extract capabilities.
AWS stated yesterday that conversion and extraction can be combined to allow you to export all SQL Server data warehouses into Amazon Redshift. This data warehouse is designed for the cloud from scratch.
Microsoft announced just the other day a preview of its cloud-based Azure Database migration service. This is similar to the AWS offering, which has been available since October 2015. AWS and Microsoft are widely considered to be the top cloud providers. They have been announcing price cuts and product enhancements.
AWS yesterday also announced its conversion/extraction tooling now includes an enhanced version of its integrated uploader. The company stated that you can choose to extract, upload and upload data to Amazon S3, extract and copy directly into Amazon Redshift, or both.
